FALMOUTH — The School Board on Monday unanimously selected Geoff Bruno as the next superintendent of schools.

Bruno, who is executive director of curriculum at Saugus Public Schools in Saugus, Mass., will start July 1 at an annual salary of $125,000, School Board Chairman Andrew Kinley said.

“I’m really excited,” Bruno said Tuesday morning. “Falmouth has just felt like the right fit from the opening interview.”

The 40-year-old Byfield, Mass., resident, is married and has four school-aged daughters. He spent a day in Falmouth on Jan. 29, touring the town’s three school buildings and Town Hall, and meeting with teachers, local leaders and other residents.

“Everyone was just very gracious and welcoming, (and) asked a lot of really good questions,” Bruno said. “I just felt at home. That was a great feeling.”

Kinley echoed his enthusiasm.

“(Bruno) really was the kind of individual we were looking for …,” he said. “Someone who is a collaborator, (and) is a communicator.”

Kinley described Bruno as a person who “wanted to come in and join in keeping Falmouth moving forward, that cycle of continuous improvement. And he matches that to a T.”

Bruno previously served as principal at a middle school in Saugus. He has also served as assistant principal at two other middle schools  in Massachusetts, and has been the head of an urban charter school. His career in education began as a middle school science teacher.

The candidate search began last September, after Superintendent Barbara Powers notified the School Board of her plan to retire, effective June 30. The board received more than 20 applications from candidates throughout the country.

“It was a fairly strong pool (of candidates),” Kinley said early this month. “It consisted of sitting superintendents, assistant superintendents, curriculum directors from all over the state of Maine and places all across the country.”

Three candidates were interviewed, but only Bruno was considered a finalist.

The Saugus school district is larger than Falmouth, with about 3,000 students, compared with 2,200. The town is 12 miles north of Boston and has a population of 26,000.
