FALMOUTH — Working close to home, two student drama clubs scored big in the state finals of the Maine Drama Festival last weekend.

The Falmouth High School Theatre Company took first place in the Class A finals held at Falmouth. The company moves on to the New England Regional Drama Festival, to be held April 26-28 at Gilford High School in Gilford, N.H.

With as many as 26 players, singers and production crew onstage at once, the company performed Alan Ayckbourn’s “This is Where We Came In,” a tale twisting vintage fairy tales through the perspectives of three story tellers.

Falmouth theater director and teacher Dede Waite said the performance was one of the best she has seen in 25 years at the school.

“This show had a unity and passion that was really extraordinary,” Waite said.

The performances garnered individual accolades as well. Falmouth students Lee Larson, Maddie Tierney and Isaac Merson were named to the All-Festival cast.

Students involved in production and staging also won awards: Kelsey Coyne won a Judge’s Commendation for her original score, Jade Russell-Johnson, Emmy Wrobleski and Genevieve Paradis were commended for set design and art, and Tessa Holbrook was commended for her costume design and construction.

In Yarmouth, site of the Class B finals for schools with fewer than 550 students, Yarmouth High School students placed second to Damariscotta-based Lincoln Academy.

The Yarmouth students performed “Bottom’s Dream,” adapted from Shakespeare’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.” Performances by Lani Geistwalker as Puck and Sophie Emmons as Robin Staveling earned them spots on the All-Festival cast.

Also competing in the Class B state final were students from Freeport High School, who finished in fifth place with a student-written play, “Carnival of Curiosity.” The work earned a Judges’ Commendation for authors Logan Freeman and Angus MacDonald.

Performances in “Carnival of Curiosity” earned Freeman, Dalton Chapman and Storme Charette spots on the All-Festival cast.
