The best news on the local football front last weekend came from Falmouth, where the Yachtsmen got in the win column for the first time.

Falmouth, which showed positive strides in a 30-14 home loss to Cape Elizabeth the week before, rolled to a 34-13 home victory over winless Lake Region. The Yachtsmen were led by Markus Foley, who rushed for 146 yards and a touchdown on 15 carries and defensively produced three solo tackles, nine assists and recovered two fumbles. Jacob Buhelt had 65 yards and two TDs on seven rushes. Noah Nelson passed for a 5-yard score to Jack Simonds, scored on a 3-yard run and both ran and threw for 2-point conversions. Patrick Thornton added six tackles and two assists to the defensive charge.

Falmouth (1-4 and tied for 10th in the Western Class B Crabtree Points standings) looks to make it two in a row Friday when it goes to 2-3 Fryeburg. Last year, the Yachtsmen handled the visiting Raiders, 42-12.

Greely is now 4-1 and fifth in Western B after a 47-6 home win over Fryeburg Friday. For the second time this season, the Rangers set the tone by returning the opening kickoff for a touchdown. This time, it was Svenn Jacobson doing the honors. TD runs from Drew Hodge and James Ferrar made it 20-0 after the first quarter. Two touchdown passes from Hodge to Jacobson, a Hodge TD run and a scoring scamper from Alex Kroot pushed the lead to 47-0 at halftime. Greely cruised from there.

The Rangers are at Gray-New Gloucester (1-4) Friday night. Last season, Greely pummeled the visiting Patriots, 68-7. A home showdown with Mountain Valley looms the following weekend.

In Western C, two-time defending state champion Yarmouth is in jeopardy of missing the playoffs after falling to 1-4 Saturday with a 34-8 loss at Winslow.

The Clippers fell behind 7-0, but took a short-lived 8-7 lead after a long touchdown from quarterback Brady Neujahr and a two-point conversion rush from Matt Woodbury. That would be the highwater mark, however, as the Black Raiders rallied to go up, 15-8, at halftime, 21-8 after three quarters and put it away with two TDs in the fourth. Winslow scored four of its touchdowns on long runs.

Yarmouth (clinging to the eighth and final playoff spot in the Western C Crabtrees) hosts 2-3 Lisbon Friday night in a must-win game. The Clippers beat the Greyhounds twice in 2011, 34-6 in the regular season and 38-0 in the semifinal round of the playoffs.

Freeport is also in the hunt even though it fell to 2-3 Saturday with a 30-26 home loss to Old Orchard Beach. The Falcons led twice in the first quarter, 7-0 after a touchdown run from Dan Burke and 14-7 after another long run by Burke, but the Seagulls went ahead to stay in the second quarter. Another Burke run pulled Freeport within 21-20, but Old Orchard Beach struck again before halftime to go up, 27-20. After a scoreless third period, the Seagulls added a field goal. A late touchdown run from Ben MacMillan pulled the Falcons within four, but after a failed two-point conversion pass, Freeport couldn’t complete the rally and fell to 11th in the Crabtrees.

The Falcons look to even their record Saturday when they go to 0-5 Telstar. Last year, host Freeport handled the Rebels, 47-13.

Looking ahead, Freeport hosts Yarmouth in the regular season finale Oct. 20. There’s a good chance that one or both schools will need to win that game to qualify for the postseason.
