FALMOUTH — This weekend, area residents will have an opportunity to think globally and act locally.

Very locally.

Homeowners and business owners are invited to attend the Falmouth Home Energy Fair from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 25, at the Falmouth High School cafeteria, 74 Woodville Road. The free event will feature heating and efficiency experts from 30 companies and organizations, who will provide advice on how to stop energy loss, save money and reduce carbon emissions in the home.

Throughout the four-hour trade show-style event, 26 vendors will give presentations on winterization, efficiency, state and federal rebates and more. The organizers will also give out raffle prizes, including a free home energy audit, according to Kimberly Darling, the town’s energy and sustainability coordinator.

The event is also kid-friendly, with snacks and planned activities, Darling said.

The event is being organized by Falmouth’s Recycling and Energy Advisory Committee, but it is open to residents of any community, Darling said.

The goals of the Recycling and Energy Advisory Committee include educating Falmouth residents and businesses about “energy-efficient, waste-reducing, clean energy opportunities and choices” and working with surrounding communities on “regional energy efficiency and clean energy strategies.”

A 2009 study by the town found that about half of Falmouth’s homes were built before 1960 and before modern energy efficiency standards were put in place.

“Many, if not most, of these houses lack adequate insulation and suffer from inefficient heating systems,” the study states.

The study also estimates that 23 percent of Falmouth’s carbon emissions come from the residential sector. Eight percent come from commercial sources.
