Falmouth freshman Sofie Matson was named Monday as Maine’s Gatorade girls’ Cross Country Runner of the Year. The award recognizes not only outstanding athletic excellence, but also high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the race course. Matson, the Class A individual state champion, became the first Falmouth female runner to be honored. Matson was also named to the All-State team and was chosen by The Forecaster as Falmouth’s Fall Female Athlete of the Year. Matson is an A student, plays the clarinet and has performed with the Portland Youth Wind Ensemble and the Portland Youth Symphony Orchestra. Matson is also a member of the Falmouth High School debate team and contributes to the school paper.
