FALMOUTH — The town is leasing a 2015 Nissan Leaf electric vehicle for two years with an option to buy.

According to a press release, leasing the car is expected to reduce the town’s carbon footprint by nearly 5,400 pounds of carbon dioxide each year. The town purchased two Toyota Prius models in 2008, and decided to trade one for the Leaf.

Falmouth was the beneficiary a grant from the Iberdrola USA Foundation that was awarded to the Greater Portland Council of Governments, to help municipalities install EV charging stations at selected sites in Maine.

ReVision energy installed the station at Town Hall, 271 Falmouth Road, on April 6 at no cost to the town. The charging time is four to six hours with the 240-volt station, compared with eight to 12 hours at a standard 120-volt charging station.
