Even while contending with a heat wave and dodging a potential hurricane, Mid-Coast athletes got the new fall sports season off to a good start. Here’s an early glimpse.

Football

Brunswick’s football team thinks it can make a run at a Class A title this season. The Dragons played a thriller in their opener, holding off host Edward Little, 21-20. Junior running back Dylan Walton ran for 147 yards on 24 carries and scored all three Brunswick touchdowns, while the Dragons defense came up with a huge stop on a critical two-point conversion late to preserve the victory.

“Everybody was tired,” Walton said. “We thought the game was over and everybody was letting up, which we shouldn’t have done. Edward Little came hard. They showed they’ve got some skills on both sides of the ball.”

“To their credit, EL kept fighting the whole game,” Brunswick coach Dan Cooper said. “They outplayed us a lot there in the second half.”

The Dragons host Skowhegan in their home opener Friday night.

Mt. Ararat is 0-1 after falling, 48-12, to visiting Cony. Derek True and Brett Milliken had TDs for the Eagles, who were within 14-12 at the half. Mt. Ararat is at defending regional champion Bangor Friday.

In Eastern B, Morse lost, 41-14, at Waterville in its opener Saturday. Shipbuilders quarterback Kevin McKellar threw for over 200 yards and a pair of scores. Morse hosts Gardiner Friday night.

Boys’ soccer

On the pitch, the Brunswick boys got off to a hot start with a 4-0 home win over Cony Friday. The Dragons were at Oxford Hills Tuesday and play at Lewiston Saturday.

Mt. Ararat tied Erskine in its first game, 1-1. The Eagles sought their first victory Tuesday at home versus Cony. They go to Edward Little Friday and have a home showdown against Brunswick Tuesday of next week.

Morse got out of the gates with a 2-0 home victory over Lewiston behind second half goals from Cody Snyder (on a penalty kick) and P.C. Ostergaard and solid goalkeeping from Grady Madden. The Shipbuilders looked to make it two straight when they went to Edward Little Tuesday. Friday, Morse travels to Erskine.

Girls’ soccer

On the girls’ side, Morse also beat Lewiston, 2-0, to start the season. Katie Henrikson’s goal (from Tori Field) put the Shipbuilders ahead 1-0 at the half. Field scored unassisted in the second half to account for the final score. Emma Seeley stopped 11 shots. Morse was at Edward Little Tuesday and hosts Erskine Saturday.

Mt. Ararat was also a 2-0 winner in its first game, at Erskine. Haley Michaud and Samee Wallace had the goals. The Eagles were at Cony Tuesday, host Edward Little Friday and play at Brunswick next Tuesday.

Speaking of the Dragons, they romped, 6-0, at Cony in their opener. Allie Walton scored twice. Brunswick was home against Oxford Hills Tuesday and plays at Lewiston Saturday.

Field hockey

Morse and Mt. Ararat’s field hockey teams opened the season against each other last Thursday with the Eagles prevailing, 3-0, thanks to two goals from Charlotte Crosby and another from Leah Hitchcock. Shipbuilders goalie Alice Stenzuist stopped 13 shots.

The Eagles hoped to go to 2-0 Tuesday when they visited Brunswick. Thursday, they were at Lewiston. Saturday, Mt. Ararat hosts Bangor.

The Shipbuilders were home against Mt. Blue Tuesday and Brunswick Thursday.

Brunswick fell, 1-0, at Oxford Hills in its first game. The Dragons hosted Mt. Ararat Tuesday, went to Morse Thursday and welcome Brewer Saturday.

Cross country

The 2010 cross country campaign began last weekend. Brunswick joined Cony and Lewiston at Edward Little. The Dragons girls won their race, while the boys were fourth. Brunswick is at Lawrence Friday.

Morse and Mt. Ararat started at Maranacook, along with Leavitt, Lincoln Academy, Monmouth, Oxford Hills and Winthrop. The Eagles won both meets, while the Shipbuilders were third in the girls’ race and fifth on the boys’ side. This Friday, Morse goes to Belfast, while Mt. Ararat runs at Edward Little.

Golf

On the links, Brunswick easily won its first two matches, 7-2, over Gardiner and 8-1, over Morse. The loss dropped the Shipbuilders to 0-2. They lost their first match to Mt. Ararat, 6-3. The Eagles looked to improve to 2-0 when they hosted Brunswick Tuesday.
