Portland Public Services crews began constructing new granite planters this week at Monument Square, in anticipation of tree planting in May. The square will get 15 new trees, most likely ginkgos, according to city Arborist Jeff Tarling. Eight will be installed along storefronts (shown), three in front of the Portland Public Library and four as part of the renovations at One Monument Square. The city, working with Portland Downtown District, is also planning on repositioning the bench seating in the square to better accommodate pedestrian flow and to allow for more sidewalk seating for restaurants. Tarling said the new trees and reorganization of seating will be the first major change the square has seen since the 1970s.
