The fall of 2009, perhaps more than ever before, was sensational and triumphant for Forecaster Country sports teams.
Falmouth, Freeport, Greely, North Yarmouth Academy and Yarmouth factored into the championship hunt in football, soccer, field hockey, cross country, golf and volleyball.
On the gridiron, Yarmouth (please see story) made an improbable run to the regional final in just its third varsity season. Freeport won its first varsity game, Falmouth enjoyed another winning season and Greely had its moments.
The Falmouth boys’ soccer team did it again, winning the Class B state title. Greely, NYA and Yarmouth also made the playoffs, as did the Falmouth, Greely, NYA and Yarmouth girls.
NYA’s field hockey team went undefeated until losing by a goal in agonizing fashion in the Class C Final. Falmouth, Freeport and Greely were also in the playoffs.
The Greely boys’ cross country team repeated as Class B champions. Falmouth, Freeport, NYA and Yarmouth also turned heads on the trails.
Golfers of both genders were at their best. Falmouth, Greely, NYA and Yarmouth all made it to states.
Last, but certainly not least, volleyball produced its most memorable campaign as neighbors and now rivals Falmouth and Greely met for the inaugural Class A championship, with the Rangers making it seven in a row. Yarmouth also had a solid year.
It’s time to turn our attention to winter, but let’s give the fall a fond farewell on the way out.
