The fall of 2009 was sensational and triumphant for city sports teams.
Cheverus, Deering, McAuley, Portland and Waynflete factored into the championship hunt in football, soccer, field hockey, cross country and golf.
On the gridiron, Cheverus made a stirring run to the regional final. Portland’s resurgence put it in the playoffs for the first time in three years.
Seven of nine soccer teams made the postseason. Cheverus’ field hockey team reached the regional final for the first time.
Both Cheverus cross country teams won Class A championships, with the girls’ squad making history in the process. The Waynflete girls’ cross country team repeated as Class C champions.
Cheverus and Deering’s golf teams had nice runs.
It’s time to turn our attention to winter, but let’s give the fall a fond farewell on the way out.
