PORTLAND — The executive director of the Maine League of Young Voters has stepped down, citing personal obligations.

Will Everitt, who served as executive director since early 2010, will be replaced by League organizers Hilary Frenkel and Nicola Wells, both serving as interim co-directors.

In a press release, Everitt said he would continue to be involved in the League as a volunteer and would be returning to his previous position as the development director for the Friends of Casco Bay.

The League of Young Voters is a national organization that focuses on getting young people involved in the democratic process. The Maine League organized the petition that put Question 4, a City Charter amendment that would have given non-citizens the right to vote in Portland, on the ballot this fall. The initiative was rejected by Portland voters by a little more than 1,000 votes.
