SCARBOROUGH — With the New Year come two new programs designed to bring families together at the Scarborough Public Library.
Lisa Hayden-Espenschade will host a Russian-themed story time for the 11 a.m., Saturday, Jan. 9 installment of the monthly series, “Stories from Around the World.” During the event, appropriate for ages 5 and up, Hayden-Espenschade will read a Russian folktale, “The Giant Turnip,” in both English and Russian. The story will be followed by an introduction to basic Russian language, a sample of Russian treats and examples of the culture’s toys and customs.
On Sunday, Jan. 10, from 1:30-3 p.m., “American Girl” fans 5 and up are invited to an “American Girl Tea Party” to launch the library’s new monthly series, “Sunday Socials at the Library.” Participants will hear excerpts from the popular “American Girl” books, discuss their favorite characters and enjoy refreshments from “American Girl” cookbooks. In addition, they will make a historic craft from an “American Girl” craft book.
Children must be accompanied by an adult. Events are free and open to the public, but those planning to attend are asked to call Youth Services at 883-4723 to reserve a spot.
