TOPSHAM — Evelyn Smith MacDonald Coffin, 93, died April 23 at Amenity Manor surrounded by her loving family.

On Oct. 27, 1917, she was born on the family farm in South Newcastle, a daughter of Alton and Florence Gray Smith.

After attending school in a one-room schoolhouse, she moved to Bath in 1935.

On June 30, 1938, she married Harry J. MacDonald. Together they managed their Bath grocery store, H.J. MacDonald Grocery, in the 1940s and 1950s.

Following Harry’s death in 1961 she later married Edward Coffin.

For the past 15 years she resided at Oak Ridge Apartments, and was very happy to live there independently until her recent health issues prevented her from doing so.

Her greatest pride and joy was her family, and she was a selfless friend whose concerns were never for her own well-being.

She enjoyed reading and writing letters to friends and family. Her grandchildren delighted in hearing her stories of growing up on a farm.

Surviving are her loving son, Edward A. MacDonald and his wife Angela of Woolwich; three grandchildren, Ian J. MacDonald of Woolwich, Benjamin D. and wife Kimberly MacDonald of Bowdoinham, and Lindsay C. MacDonald and her husband Allen Daniels of Winnegance; a great-granddaughter, Kylie Jean MacDonald of Bowdoinham;  brother-in-law Herbert Wright, and sisters-in-law, Grace Smith of Woolwich, Beverly Smith of Chelsea and Lucy MacDonald of Lansdowne, Penn.; special friends, Lottie Brown and Gingermary Loomis; several nieces and nephews; and cousins.

A graveside service will be held on Saturday, May 14, at 11 a.m. at Oak Grove Cemetery in Bath.

Arrangements are by David E. Desmond & Son Funeral Home, 638 High St., Bath.
