CUMBERLAND — Evelyn Maxwell Oulton, 86, died Jan. 23 at the Gosnell Memorial Hospice House. 

She was born in Portland, daughter of J. Howard and Evelyn Maxwell, and grew up as the oldest daughter of five on J. Howard Maxwell’s farm in Cape Elizabeth. 

After graduating from Cape Elizabeth High School, she attended business school and began working at the Portland Gas Light Company.

She and her husband Frank lived and worked on their dairy farm in Cumberland for many years until they sold the farm in 1987. 

She was a member of the North Deering Alliance Church in Portland.

Her hobbies included gardening, birding, canning vegetables, crocheting, knitting and crossword puzzles.

She was predeceased by her parents and her sister, Carolyn Moffett.

Surviving are her loving husband of 59 years, Frank; four daughters, Diane Roberge of Cumberland, Nancy Smith of Cumberland, Sarah and Paul Lavelle of Colorado Springs, Colo., Eleanor and Steve Berry of Cumberland, and son, Paul and Betsy Oulton of Falmouth; grandchildren, Stephanie and John, Heather and Marc, Chris and Sarah, Stacey and Anthony, Heidi, James and Elana, Lindsey and Greg; and great-grandchildren, Kailey, Liam, Zoe and Aoife Evelyn;  siblings, John and Joey Maxwell, Kenneth and Elsie Maxwell and Arlene Espling.

Visiting hours were held Tuesday.

A funeral took place Wednesday at the North Deering Alliance Church, in Portland.

Arrangements are by Hobbs Funeral Home, 230 Cottage Road, South Portland.
