SOUTH PORTLAND — Evelyn D. Callahan, 96, of South Portland, formerly of Portland, Houlton and New York, died Jan. 19 at South Portland Nursing Home. 

Callahan was born in Hodgdon to Ambrose and Lucy Roaix Callahan.  She attended Hodgdon schools and was a graduate of Houlton High School. Callahan also was a graduate of Houlton Business College, earning a degree in business administration.

She worked as a bookkeeper with Smith Plumbing and Heating for several years and as an auditor for the Northland Hotel for 15 years, retiring in 1970 from American Hotels of New York City. She enjoyed her work and traveled to the company’s 60 locations throughout the United States and the Panama Canal region.

She was a former communicant of St. Mary’s Church in Houlton and St. Dominic’s Church in Portland, and was a communicant of Holy Cross in South Portland.

Callahan was predeceased by her parents, two sisters and a brother. Survivors include a sister, Phyllis, and brother-in-law Rellon Cole of South Portland; a niece, Joyce Mitchell of Big Rapids, Mich.; nephew Herman Peabody of Lincoln; four grand-nieces and eight grand-nephews, which include a family of triplets.

A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated Saturday at Holy Cross Church in South Portland. Interment will be in the spring in Evergreen Cemetery in Houlton.
