PORTLAND — The Maine Commission on Governmental Ethics and Election Practices on Wednesday unanimously decided not to investigate further and ethics complaint lodged against Rep. Ben Chipman.
“We knew all along the ethics commission would reject the complaint,” Chipman said.
A Democrat now serving House District 40, Chipman is a candidate in the June 14 primary for the Senate District 27 seat being vacated by Democratic Sen. Justin Alfond, D-Portland.
He is running against Rep. Diane Russell of House District 39 and Dr. Charles Radis.
Portland resident Steven Biel, a volunteer on the Russell campaign, filed the complaint. He alleged Chipman evaded spending rules governing candidates received state Clean Elections funding when printing invitations to receptions supporting Chipman’s campaign.
“This was an attack by a campaign worker of my opponent Diane Russell,” Chipman said. “The purpose was to distract attention from the ethics violations that Diane Russell has had over the past several months.”
