BATH — Elwin C. Smith, 89, died Dec. 15 at Mid Coast Hospital in Brunswick with his family by his side.

Born in Limington on Sept. 28, 1922, he was a son of Frank and Luella (Hartford) Smith. He grew up in Hollis and was educated in the local schools, graduating from Hollis High School in 1940. After graduation, Smith joined the U.S. Army and served during World War II.

On June 22, 1946, he married Ruby E. Anderson and the couple made their home in Auburn. Smith worked for New England Tel & Tel in Lewiston until 1962, when he received a promotion to office foreman and was transferred to Bath until his retirement in 1985.

He greatly enjoyed playing with his great grandchildren and spending time with his family at the cottage on New Meadows River. A Jack-of-all-trades, there was nothing he could not fix. In his spare time, he enjoyed woodworking and gardening, and became known for growing wonderful vegetables and berries.

Smith belonged to the Sage Swingers Square Dancers, was a member of the Telephone Pioneers, served on the executive board for the Salvation Army, and was the organizer for the Kettle & Bell Ringers. Always looking to give back to his community, he volunteered many hours of his time to the Bath Soup Kitchen/Food Pantry, and coordinated the infant hearing program. He was also a member of the Bath United Methodist Church.

He was predeceased by his sisters, Leona Hanson and Frances Anderson and her husband Richard.
