WINDHAM — Elizabeth “Betty” (Rand) Surgi, 85, of Cumberland Center, died Sept. 3 at Ledgewood Manor in Windham after a short period of respiratory complications from Alzheimer’s disease.  

Born July 31, 1925 in Rumford, she was the second daughter of Ernest Abbott Rand and Carolyn Huston Rand.

She grew up in Cumberland, where she attended local schools, and graduated from Greely High School in 1943.

While she was married to William F. Surgi, she lived near New Orleans.

After returning to Cumberland in 1960, she became a secretary in the Portland school system, where she received the Superintendent’s Award in 1984.  

She was active in various groups, including Friends of the Prince Memorial Library, Daughters of the American Revolution, Cumberland Historical Society, and Cumberland Congregational Church.

Her hobbies included knitting, golf, and bridge.  

She is survived by two sons, Rand and his wife Kathy of Cumberland and Alan of Lompoc, Calif.; and a sister, Jane Pendelton, of Lunenburg, Mass.  

Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 8, at Cumberland Congregational Church, 282 Main St., Cumberland, with a reception to follow at the church hall.  

Arrangements are by Lindquist Funeral Home, One Mayberry Lane, Yarmouth.
