SOUTH PORTLAND — Elizabeth “Bette” A. Stoddard, 86, a lifelong resident of South Portland, died peacefully on May 25.

Stoddard was born April 9, 1929, the fourth of five children of Lawrence L. and Dorothy A. Stoddard.

Elizabeth graduated from South Portland High School in 1947, and then was employed by Maine Surgical Supply Co. She went on to work for several years at C.M. Bowker Insurance Co., and in 1966 began her career as a legal secretary at the law firm of Pierce Atwood in Portland. After retiring from Pierce Atwood, she continued to work part-time at the Law Offices of Albert G. Ayre until 2000.

Stoddard greatly enjoyed bowling and was an active member of the St. John’s bowling team. She also was a member of St. Alban’s Episcopal Church in Cape Elizabeth, serving on the Altar Guild for many years.

Stoddard was predeceased by her parents; her brothers, Ira Stoddard and Linwood Stoddard; and a sister, Phyllis Hasselbach.

She is survived by her sister, Helen June Reynolds, of Standish, as well as many nieces and nephews.

A funeral was held May 29 at St. Alban’s Episcopal Church, and interment followed at Brooklawn Memorial Park in Portland.
