YARMOUTH — Voters next week will elect two new members of the School Committee and decide whether to fund a major renovation of the library.

Three candidates are vying for two open School Committee seats because members Art Bell and Abby Diggins are ineligible to run again after serving two terms.

Candidates Leah Guay, 52, and Bob Watterson, 56, are pledging to bring their business experience to the committee, while Craig Wolff, 43, hopes to return to the board after losing a re-election bid last year.

All three candidates have been active participants in the school community and have children who are enrolled in the system.

The June 25 ballot has two other elections, but they are not contested.

Town Council Chairman Steve Woods and Councilor Pat Thompson are unopposed for re-election, and William Reinsborough is unopposed for re-election to the Yarmouth Water District Board of Trustees seat he has held for more than two decades.

A $1.5 million bond referendum will also go before voters.

The bond will help pay for a $2.5 million renovation project at Merrill Memorial Library, which will include construction of a $300,000 enclosed, heated, glass-walled corridor that will extend from the parking lot to the entrance.

The project also includes top-to-bottom renovations of the existing space: a new presentation room, expanded restrooms and private tutoring rooms, plus rewiring, improved insulation, and a fire suppression system.

If the bond is approved, work could begin as soon as October and be completed within 18 months. During that time, the library will remain open, Board of Trustees President Gro Flatebo said.

Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday, June 25, at Robert W. Boyd Amvets Post 2, 148 North Road.
