SCARBOROUGH — Eldred Hartley “Hi” Harmon, 99, died April 7.

Born on Black Point Road Aug. 30, 1910, the son of Leroy and Beatrice (Plummer) Harmon, he lived within two miles of his birthplace for his entire life.

In 1927 he graduated from Bessey High School.

He married Elizabeth F. Murray in 1933 and they adopted two boys, brothers Stephen and Earl Harmon, in the 1940s.

Throughout his life he worked with his father on the family farm. In the winter, he drove oil delivery trucks.

He also helped move buildings throughout Maine, and transported over-sized, heavy equipment and building materials throughout New England.

He served as a volunteer firefighter, deputy chief, and was later appointed the first full-time fire chief of Scarborough in the 1970s, retiring at age 65. For the next 30 years he remained very active cutting wood, clamming, and helping move buildings.

In 1990 he married Patricia Murray and together they traveled in their motor home to every state in the continental U.S. In 2003 they flew to Hawaii, completing their tour of every state in the county.

For 83 years he was a member of the Black Point Congregational Church.

Last year on his 99th birthday, he was presented with Scarborough’s Boston Post Cane.

He is survived by his wife Pat of Scarborough; son Earl of Texas, stepson Paul Murray of Matinicus, stepdaughter Peggy Murray of Kennebunk; grandchildren, Debi Guinones of Biddeford, Sherri Trauth of Georgia, Robert Harmon of Portland, Earl “Chip” Harmon of Texas, Stephen Harmon of California, Eric and Emily Murray of Matinicus; numerous great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

Memorial services were held earlier this week.

Arrangements are by Hobbs Funeral Home, 671 U.S. Route 1, Scarborough.
