PORTLAND — Elaine D. Barry, 68, died peacefully July 6 at the Barron Center surrounded by her friends.

Born in Portland, she attended South Portland schools and graduated from South Portland High School in 1961.

In 1971 she received a diploma from Holy Ghost School of Practical Nursing in Cambridge, Mass., and also attended Curry College in Milton, Mass., and Quincy College in Quincy, Mass.

After the death of her father she returned to South Portland to care for her mother.

For 25 years she worked as a pediatric nurse for Maine Medical Center.

In 1989, she graduated summa cum laude from the University of Southern Maine in Gorham with a bachelor of science degree in elementary education. While pursuing her masters in administration she was diagnosed with breast cancer. She was a 16-year survivor.

She had been teaching at Waterboro Elementary School for 11 years.

A faithful communicant of Holy Cross Church, she was active on the Parish Council, served as a member and president of the Women’s Visitation Sodality, served as a Eucharistic Minister, and sang in the choir.

She was predeceased by her mother, father and brother, William H. Barry Jr.

Surviving are her nieces Susan Hoffman of North Carolina and Maureen Weeks of Scarborough; and grandnieces and grandnephews, Bobby Hoffman, Ryan Hoffman, Katie Hoffman and Katie Pride.

Memorial services were held earlier this week.

Arrangements are by Conroy-Tully Crawford South Portland Chapel, 1024 Broadway, South Portland.
