YARMOUTH — Edward J. Molloy, 81, died July 6 with his children by his side.

Molloy was the son of Sarah G. and Edward M. Molloy, and attended public schools in Fairfield, Connecticut. He graduated from Yale University, where he was a star quarterback from 1952-54 and set football records that stand today.

Following graduation, Molloy served in the U.S. Navy before retiring as a lieutenant junior grade. He later earned a master’s degree from Wharton Business School.

Molloy moved to Portland with his family in 1967 and later was a resident of Yarmouth. He had a successful career in life insurance and real estate sales, and spent his later years working at L.L. Bean until retiring in 2006.

Molloy’s interest in sports continued long past his days playing college football. He coached Little League baseball, served as an umpire, and enjoyed tennis and golf. He was also a regular member of the YMCA.

A lifetime volunteer, Molloy served many community organizations, including the United Way, Junior Achievement, Habitat for Humanity, the Portland Symphony Orchestra and St. Elizabeth’s Child Development Center. In later years he volunteered at the Reiche Community School, a YMCA day care, the Portland Public Library, Literacy Volunteers of America and Meals on Wheels.

Molloy is survived by his sisters, Sally Williams and Ann Carey; his former wife, Sally McGonagle; their five children, Mary Tawa and husband, Greg, Danny Molloy, Monica Sweeney and husband, Pat, Catherine Vernier and husband, Jim, and Pete Molloy and wife, Lisa; and his eight grandchildren, Keegan, Zoe, Elena, Allyson, Patrick, Sarah, Jack and Maya.

A service in celebration of Molloy’s life took place on July 13 at Lindquist Funeral Home in Yarmouth.
