SCARBOROUGH — Edward Francis Cogswell Sr., 94, died Dec. 14 at the Maine Veterans’ Home in Scarborough, with his family by his side.

Cogswell was the son of John D. Cogswell and Martha Horneff. He attended Portland schools, enlisted in the U.S. Army and served in World War II. Later, he worked for C.M. Rice Paper Company for 42 years.

He married the love of his life, Elizabeth I. Cribby, on June 28, 1947. 

Cogswell loved golf and enjoyed the game well into his 80s. He also enjoyed visiting casinos with his family and playing the slot machines. The Wheel of Fortune was his favorite.

Another of his joys was preparing Sunday dinners and his many cookouts. He never sat down and ate until everyone else was fed.

The family would like to send a very special thank you to Stan and Shane Dobson, who not only helped take care of Cogswell but treated him as if he were their own dad, along with their brother Stephen White, who predeceased him.

Cogswell was also predeceased by his wife; parents; brothers, John, George, Billy, Frank, Charlie and Jimmy; sisters, Ora, Lillian, Martha and Viola; and grandsons, John Christopher Cogswell and Kevin James Sparks II.

He is survived by his sons, Edward F. Jr. and wife Pat, and John and wife Cathy; daughters, Molly Harvey and husband Skip, Jamie Amergian and companion Rich Arey, and Maggie Sparks; brothers, Walter and Thomas Cogswell; 14 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren, with the 20th to be born in January; and many nieces and nephews.

Special thanks is extended to the staff of Maine Veterans’ Homes, who not only took good care of Cogswell but also his family. Thanks as well to Casco Bay Dialysis and the Beacon Hospice.

The family also thanks his friends honorary families the Dobsons, the Napolitanos, Jackie Grant, Tony and Frank.
