SOUTH PORTLAND — Edith “Betty” Kennedy, 94, of South Portland, died Sunday at Mercy Hospital.

She was born in South Portland Jan. 12, 1919, a daughter of Patrick L. Halloran and Alice E. Halloran. She grew up in Portland and graduated from Deering High School in 1936. She also graduated from Northeastern Business College.  

Before her marriage to Richard V. Kennedy on Sept. 6, 1941, She worked for the Boston and Maine Railroad in its general offices. After her children were grown, she worked in the real estate business and retired as executive officer of the Portland Board of Realtors.

She was an active volunteer with over 1,000 hours of service to Mercy Hospital, knitting caps for newborn children. She also served the VNA, working at flu clinics up to the age of 92.

Kennedy was a communicant and a eucharistic minister at Holy Cross Church. In addition, she was a member of the Women of Rotary and of the Holy Cross Visitation Sodality.

She was predeceased by her husband, Richard V. Kennedy, in 2001. She is survived by her children and their spouses, Richard V. and Karen Kennedy of Falmouth, Susan and Michael Walsh of Monmouth Beach, N.J., and Charlie and Joyce Kennedy of Cape Elizabeth. She also leaves eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be held from 4-7 p.m. on Friday at Conroy-Tully Crawford South Portland Chapel, 1024 Broadway, South Portland. Prayers will be recited at 8:15 a.m. Saturday at the chapel, followed at 9 a.m. by a Mass of Christian burial at Holy Cross Church, at Broadway and Cottage Road, South Portland. Burial will follow at New Calvary Cemetery, South Portland.
