FALMOUTH — Police are investigating the cause of a fatal accident on Gray Road this morning.

Cumberland resident Casey Green, 22, was killed when her 2008 Chevy Cobalt crossed the center line and struck a tree in the vicinity of 236 Gray Road (Route 100), Police Chief Ed Tolan said.

The accident was reported at 2:48 a.m.

Green was declared dead at Maine Medical Center in Portland. With her in the vehicle was Matthew Blanchard, a 24-year-old South Portland resident. Tolan said Blanchard was taken to Maine Medical Center with injuries that were not life-threatening.

Blood samples from Green and Blanchard were obtained for testing, but Tolan said it was too early to tell if alcohol or drugs played a role in the crash.

Police have not determined who was behind the wheel when the accident occurred, and Tolan said there were no skid marks at the scene to determine if excessive speed was involved.

The investigation, with assistance from the Maine State Police accident reconstruction team, showed Green and Blanchard were wearing safety belts and vehicle air bags had deployed.
