DURHAM — A community forum to discuss the town’s growth management options as part of the Comprehensive Plan Committee’s work will be held Saturday, Oct. 20, 9 a.m.-noon at Durham Community School.

Residents will be able to voice their “concerns and goals for the growth and development in the town over the next 20 years,” according to the town’s website.

Options under discussion include building new homes on smaller lots in the town’s Southwest Bend Growth District to “preserve rural character in the rest of Durham,” improving development buffer regulations to allow new homes on larger lots across the community, and rolling back land use regulations to allow smaller lots everywhere in town as long as the development meets the state’s environmental standards.

Between 2000 and 2015, more than 400 new homes were built in Durham, according to the town. In a release, Town Planner George Thebarge said officials “want to explore how the town can successfully accommodate another 400 units of housing over the next 20 years while preserving community character and protecting natural resources.”
