CHEBEAGUE ISLAND — A fatal car accident occurred on the island Sept. 8 when a truck hit a utility pole.
The driver was Stephen Hamilton, 68, of Gorham. According to the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office, Hamilton “failed to negotiate a curve” which resulted in his truck striking a pole. He was pronounced dead at the scene and was not wearing a seat belt.
Hamilton was the only occupant of the 1998 Ford Ranger, according to a statement from the sheriff’s office, which said speed may have been a factor.
The crash occurred at 4:24 p.m. on South Road.
