TOPSHAM — Dr. William Edward Hill Jr., died peacefully at his home at the Highlands on June 4.

Born Oct. 28, 1923, in Waterbury, Conn., he was the eldest son of Louise (Robinson) and William E. Hill Sr.

While attending Bowdoin College, his education was interrupted by his service in the 45th Infantry during World War II.

He returned to Bowdoin and graduated in 1946, and continued on to medical school, graduating from Temple University School of Medicine in Philadelphia in 1952.

After joining his father’s medical office in Naugatuck, Conn., he established his own practice, which he maintained for 36 years. In addition to serving as a physician to eight industrial and electrical companies, he was often seen carrying his doctor’s bag making house calls .

After retiring in 1988, he and his wife Mary enjoyed spending time at the family cottage at Popham Beach, where he fulfilled a lifelong dream of owning a Downeast lobster boat-style cruiser.

In 1998, they purchased a home at the Highlands in Topsham where he was a member of the activities committee.

Both he and his wife spent many hours volunteering at Mid Coast Hospital and the Maine Maritime Museum.  

In addition, he was a board member of the Friends of Seguin, Popham Boat Owners Association, and the Popham Chapel.
 
He was predeceased by his loving wife Mary of 62 years who recently died on March 18, and his sister, Virginia Hill.

Surviving are three daughters, Susan Beaman and her husband, Fred of Georgetown, Mary Lou Fay and her husband, Richard of Fort Worth, Texas, and Jennifer Couture of Vernon, Conn.; a brother, Robert C. Hill and his wife, Mary Cay of Naugatuck, Conn.; his five loving grandchildren, Julie F. Simmons, Erin F. Reinhardt, Laura Fay, Daniel Couture, Sarah Couture,; two great-grandchildren, Carson and Hannah Simmons; and nieces and nephews.
 
On July 18 at 2 p.m., a joint celebration of life for Bill and his wife will be held at the Popham Beach Chapel in Phippsburg.
