BRUNSWICK — Dr. Edward Atkinson McFarland, 94, died March 23 at Mid Coast Senior Health Center.

Born at McFarland’s Corner in Montville on June 28, 1915, he was the only child of Aaron Pratt and Nettie Ramsay McFarland.

He was educated in Waterville and Lisbon Falls schools, and graduated from Maine Central Institute in 1932.

After earning a bachelor’s of science degree from Bowdoin College in 1936, he received his medical degree from George Washington University School of Medicine in 1941.

From 1942-1946, he served as a flight surgeon and as a regimental surgeon with the 3rd Army Battalion in Europe during World War II. He attained the rank of major and was awarded two battle stars.

After the war he continued his post graduate studies in medicine and obstetrics at George Washington University.

From 1946 to 1979 he practiced general medicine, obstetrics and anesthesiology in Brunswick. Over the years he served on the staff of the Brunswick Community, Parkview Memorial, Regional Memorial and Bath hospitals and was named chief of staff of Brunswick Community Hospital, and chief of anesthesiology at Brunswick Community and Regional Memorial hospitals.

On July 26, 1981, he married Theresa Senecia Duran Sabate.

Surviving are his wife of 28 years, Theresa Senecia Duran Sabate McFarland of Brunswick; two stepdaughters, Paula V. Schafer and Mary Ann V. Schafer Adolf and her husband Ruediger Adolf; three grandchildren, Conrad Gustav Adolf, Marcus Wilhelm Adolf, and Isabel Alexandria Adolf, all of Manhattan, New York.

At his request, there will be no services.

Memorial donations may be made to either Mid Coast Hospital, 123 Medical Center Drive, Brunswick, ME 04011 or to the Parkview Seventh Day Adventist Hospital, 329 Maine St., Brunswick, ME 04011.

Arrangements are by Stetson’s Funeral Home, 12 Federal St., Brunswick.
