FALMOUTH — Police reported a rash of street sign thefts, the most recent of which was the theft of the Shady Lane sign on Aug. 27.

Police Lt. John Kilbride said more than 40 street signs have been stolen, which have cost the town nearly $2,000 to replace.

With several new police and fire personnel who may not be familiar with the town’s roads, Kilbride said the losses increase response times, too.

“It takes three to four weeks to order and receive the replacement signs,” he said. “This is affecting people’s safety.”

Because removing the signs ish a time-consuming process, police are hoping there may be people who have witnessed the crimes. They’re asking the public to come forward with any information.

“This has gone beyond a prank,” Kilbride said.
