SOUTH PORTLAND — Douglas G. Holmes Jr., 69, formerly of South Portland, died Nov. 23 in Billings, Montana, after struggling with complications from bypass surgery.

Holmes was born in Portland on Feb. 12, 1945, to Douglas G. Holmes Sr. and Marion Dyson Holmes. He attended South Portland schools and then served in the U.S. Air Force.

He joined the Maine State Police in 1967, and served proudly in many capacities until his retirement in 1993. He then ran his own private investigation business. In later years he decided to travel and called an RV his home, touring throughout the United States.

Holmes is survived by his three children, Jeffrey and wife Bethany Holmes, of South Portland, Jennifer and husband Stephen Masters, of Scarborough, and Timothy and wife Amy Holmes, of Ohio; two sisters, Barbara and husband John Coffey, of New Hampshire, and Merrily Massillon, of Ohio; a brother, Allen and wife Michelle Holmes, of Florida; four grandchildren, Lydia, Max, Toni and Nathan; and several nieces and nephews.

Visiting hours were held Dec. 3 at Conroy-Tully Crawford South Portland Chapel, followed by a service. Burial will be private.
