FALMOUTH — Dorothy Sims Ryan, 96, died at her home in Falmouth on July 27.
Born in Savannah, Ga., she was the daughter of Irvin A. Sims and Dorothy Hubbard Sims. She graduated from Deering High School in 1934, and Wells College in 1938, a member Phi Beta Kappa.
During her younger years, she was a summer resident of Auburn Colony, South Harpswell and Sawyer’s Island off Boothbay.
She married Harwood E. Ryan in 1942. She was a communicant of the Episcopal Church of St. Mary the Virgin, in Falmouth, and was for many years parish secretary there.
She enjoyed volunteer work at the Falmouth Memorial Library and Maine Audubon Society.
She was a member of the Casco Bay Power Squadron, achieving rank of Navigator; Junior League of Portland, Portland Yacht Club, Audubon Society, Friends of Casco Bay, St. Mary’s Garden Club, and Portland Museum of Art. A member of the National Society of Colonial Dames in America in the State of Maine, she served for many years as treasurer of the Colonial Dames’ Tate House.
She is survived by two daughters, Anne Harwood Ryan and her husband, Robert E. Wood, of Falmouth, and Judith Allison Ryan and her husband, Gregory G. Fergin, of Dili, Timor Leste; four grandchildren, Sarah Overmoyer and husband, Jadrien, of Pawcatuck, Conn., Andrew Wood and wife, Stacey, of Milton, N.H., Will Fergin, of Sydney, Australia, and Amalia Fergin, of Salem, Ore.; and three great-grandchildren Sage, Finlay and Beckett.
She was predeceased by her husband;, her brother, Henry F. H. Sims, of Portland, and sisters, Virginia, of Stowe, Vt., and Anne, of Staunton, Va.
A memorial service will be held 10 a.m. Oct. 4 at the Episcopal Church of St. Mary the Virgin, 43 Foreside Road, Falmouth. If desired, memorial contributions may be made to the Falmouth Memorial Library, 5 Lunt Road, Falmouth, ME 04105.
