ORR’S ISLAND — Dorothy Bernice Doughty Black, 91, died while sleeping at her home Nov. 14.

On July 21, 1918, she was born on Bailey Island, the daughter of G.W. “Wash” Doughty and Jennie Palmer Munsey Doughty.

She married Ralph H. Black on Jan. 30, 1941. Their home on Orr’s Island was a frequent meeting place for young and old.

During the course of her long life she worked in many different capacities, including as a bookkeeper, school bus driver, museum receptionist, U.S Postal service employee and Orr’s Island postmaster.

Her interests included sewing, playing piano, camping, square-dancing, family genealogy and crafts.

In the 1960s she was an officer for the Brunswick High School AFSC student exchange program and served as host parents to French exchange students.

She was an active member of the Orr’s Island Methodist Church, People Plus of Brunswick and Bath Evergreens.

A kind and caring person, she was known for her good listening skills, sense of fairness and commitment to improving the world.

She was predeceased by four siblings, Ada Johnson, Lester Doughty, “Baby Margaret” and Leona Harris.

Survivors include her husband of 68 years, Ralph of Orr’s Island; two sons, Ralph H. “Chip” Black Jr. of Bailey Island, Stephen A. Black of Newton, Mass. and Orr’s Island; her sister, Barbara Doughty Munsey of Orr’s Island; three grandchildren, Jennifer Black Alosa of Manchester, Vt., Annika Reppenhagen Black of Bridgton and Stephen Doughty Black of Bath; three great-grandchildren, Jack, Riggs and Madison Alosa of Manchester, Vt.; her daughter-in-law, C. Zezette Larsen of Newton, Mass. and Orr’s Island; and many nieces and nephews.
