YARMOUTH — Doramay Bragg, 89, died peacefully in her sleep on June 17.

She was born in Stearns, Kentucky, on June 30, 1924, and spent her early years in Winfield, Tennessee. Following the death of her father, her mother, Frances Terry, returned to the family’s home in Maine, bringing 11-year-old Bragg and her younger brother, Wilbert.

She attended Sherman High School, where she met her future husband, Edward Bragg, after sharing a classroom seat on the first day of school. She later transferred to Mt. Desert Island High School, graduating in 1942. The couple married that year, just prior to her husband’s departure for war service.

They enjoyed a happy and meaningful life together until Edward’s death in 2005, after 63 years of marriage. She was a source of constant support and encouragement to him while he studied engineering, and while the couple raised four sons.

Bragg had a 50-year career as a hairdresser and managed her own beauty parlor in Portland until her first retirement at age 75. She then staffed the salon at Brighton Medical Center until her second retirement at age 85.

She is survived by her brother and sister-in-law, Wilbert and Joan Terry, of Southwest Harbor; four sons and their spouses, Lee Bragg and Deborah Kennedy, of Freeport, Terry and Gail Bragg, of Cumberland Foreside, Dale and Nan Bragg, of Cumberland, and Randy and Jen Bragg, of Nashua, New Hampshire; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and her very close friend and co-conspirator of 53 years, Lucy Hodgdon.

A funeral service will be held Wednesday, July 9 at 1 p.m., at the Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Mount Vernon Road, Augusta.
