SOUTH PORTLAND — Every first-grade student recently received a free book and bookmark donated by the Maine Education Association (MEA).

The books were funded by a $10,000 Read Across America grant received by the MEA and paid for by the National Educational Association and Renaissance Dental.

The School Department received 14 different titles and students were encouraged to choose their own book. The donation was part of an ongoing statewide initiative to get young students interested in reading and learning outside of the classroom.
