WISCASSET — Donald W. Leavitt Jr., 77, died May 3 at his home.

He was born in Woolwich on July 15, 1934, a son of Donald W. and Dorothy L. Leavitt.

He attended Wiscasset schools and graduated from Wiscasset Academy in 1951.

On Nov. 20, 1955, he married Merrye V. Wright. He was employed by his father and helped build the Maine State Turnpike. In the 80s he owned and operated Don Leavitt Inc. as a general contractor.

He was an officer in the Wiscassett Rod & Gun Club and a member of the Wiscasset Recreation Committee. He was a youth baseball and basketball coach and a member of the NRA.

Leavitt enjoyed hunting, fishing, boating, family cookouts, animals, training dogs and spending time at his camp. He also loved attending his children and grandchildren’s sporting events.

He was predeceased by his wife, Merrye V. Leavitt on Nov. 3, 2011.

He is survived by a son, Donald M. Leavitt and his wife, Valerie; daughter, Vickie L. Hersom and her husband, Robert; half sister, Patti-Jo Barter; grandsons Dan and Nick Hersom, Kyle Leavitt and his companion, Grace Usher, Casey Leavitt and Zach Bradford; great-grandson, Austin Michael Leavitt; and many nieces and nephews.

Visiting hours were held on May 10 at Daigle Funeral Home, 819 High St., Bath followed by a funeral service at 2 p.m. on May 11 at the funeral home. Burial will take place in Greenlawn Cemetery in Wiscasset at a later date.
