CHEBEAGUE ISLAND — Donald R. Souchek, 88, a longtime resident of Chebeague Island, died Sept. 10 at Maine Medical Center, following a brief illness.

He was born in Iowa City, Iowa, a son of Henry C. and Gertrude (Sook) Souchek. Donald received an athletic scholarship to attend Cornell University, and later transferred to the University of Michigan. He was a member of the Michigan football team that won the 1948 national collegiate championship.

He met Joyce B. Bunn while at Michigan, and the couple married on Sept. 9, 1950. Souchek began his career working for the Chevrolet Motor Division of General Motors, in Flint, Michigan.

In 1959, he transferred to Massachusetts, where his neighbors soon introduced him to Chebeague Island. Souchek and his wife rented a home there for a few years before purchasing it in 1965. He retired in 1987 as director of finance and administration from Volkswagen Group, and the couple moved to Chebeague Island permanently.

A social and outgoing person, Souchek enjoyed golf in his free time, as well as working with tin and glass.

He was predeceased by a brother, Ralph C. Souchek.
