SCARBOROUGH — Donald Jan Whitten, 72, died Dec. 22 at the Gosnell Memorial Hospice House.

He was born on Dec. 14, 1941, the son of James F. and Flora A. Fairfield Whitten. He grew up in Scarborough and attended Scarborough High School.

Whitten served in the U.S. Air Force from 1961 to 1966. He later worked for the U.S. Postal Service and the Maine Turnpike Authority. He was active with the American Legion, and enjoyed being part of the Scarborough Fish and Game Association. His interests included trap shooting, traveling to many states for shoots, karaoke, dancing, NASCAR and Beech Ridge Speedway.

He was predeceased by his parents and two brothers, Jack and John.

He is survived by his children, Elizabeth Worley and husband Gary Worley, Howard Whitten and Chad Dowling; a grandson; two granddaughters; one great-granddaughter; many nieces and nephews; and sisters-in-law, Janice Whitten and Joan Whitten.

A private man, he shared his life with three very special women, and was survived by the three great loves of his life, Pat Hinkley, Wendy Boisvert and Durinda Jeanne Mulka.

The family would like to thank Hospice of Southern Maine, Gosnell Memorial Hospice House, and visiting nurses for their care. A special thanks was also extended to Pat Hinkley for the great care she gave when his children were unable to be there for him.

A celebration of Whitten’s life was held at American Legion Post 197 in Westbrook on Dec. 29. Burial with military honors will be at a later date.
