YARMOUTH – Donald “Jack” Hildreth, 83, died Oct. 4 at his home with his family by his side.

He was born in Freeport on July 26, 1932, the son of Watson and Amy Hildreth. Hildreth graduated from North Yarmouth Academy and Portland Junior College.

After college he enlisted in the Army Air Force. After he was discharged, Hildreth went to work for St. Johnsbury Trucking Company, where he was employed until he retired. Finding he needed to keep busy, Hildreth went to work as a driver for Pape Chevrolet.

Hildreth was an avid hunter of birds and rabbits who also loved fishing, golf, bowling and spending time with his family. He was known for his dogs, starting with one named Duke, through numerous canines named Peter, to his most recent companion, Cocoa.

Loved for his wit and humor, Hildreth enjoyed practical jokes. His generosity was measured only by the depth of his friendships.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Connie; five sons, Marc, Dana, Dean, John and George; a daughter, Susan; 12 grandchildren, Jennifer Hildreth, Allyson Semle, Melanie Sughrue, Amy Reynolds, Diana Enman, Donald Hildreth, Katie Hildreth, Craig Hildreth, Jeffrey Hildreth, Julia Hildreth, Samuel Hildreth and Sean Lupsewicz; six great-grandchildren, Elanor and Everet Semle, Ryker and Hayden Sughrue and Landon and Amelia Reynolds; a sister, Donna “Jill” O’Hara, and many extended family members.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Oct. 12 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Yarmouth.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to: Affinity of Maine, 400 Riverside St., Portland, ME 04103 or AmVets Post 2, P.O. Box 545, Yarmouth, ME 04096.
