PORTLAND — Dominic Louis Faietta Sr., 81, died peacefully surrounded by family on Dec. 18 at Maine Medical Center.

He was born in Portland on May 16, 1928, a son of Joseph and Antoinette Faietta.

After attending Portland High School, he joined the Merchant Marines until he entered the U.S. Army, serving in the Korean War from 1950-1952, where he earned two Bronze Stars.

Following the war, he joined the Portland Fire Department until he retired in 1975.

In 1953 he married Barbara Clowes and had four children.

After his retirement from the Fire Department, he spent many years working with the Maine Charitable Association and the Maine Historical Society.

Throughout his life he was well-known for his sense of humor and had many friends.

More than anything, he enjoyed spending time with his beloved grandchildren. His happiest times were spent with his family at Sebago and Highland Lakes.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Barbara Clowes; four children, Dominic Sr. and wife Deborah Faietta of Yarmouth, Michael and wife Jeanne Faietta of North Yarmouth, Mary-Ann and husband Bill Coppersmith Sr. of Windham, and Jeanine and husband Brian Eastman of Freepor; nine grandchildren, Marisa Faietta, Adam Faietta, Nicole Faietta, Alexa Faietta, Bill Coppersmith Jr. and wife Whitney Coppersmith, Andrew Coppersmith, Stephanie Eastman, Matthew Eastman, and Nick Eastman; great-granddaughter Jayden Faietta; two sisters, Theresa Adams and Marie Hammond; and many nieces and nephews.

Visiting hours were held Tuesday at Jones, Rich, & Hutchins Funeral Home in Portland.

A funeral service will be held Wednesday at 10 a.m. in the chapel of the funeral home.
