Bob Johnson, owner of Scratch Baking Co. in South Portland, confirmed that the bakery at 416 Preble St. on Willard Square will soon serve more than breads, bagels and sweets. Johnson said the bakery office has been moved to make more room for kitchen preparation space and a counter area. “We will once again be offering a small selection of sandwiches, salads, and soups as we did a while ago,” he said in an email. “But no seating … we remain grab and go.”
Miyake, at 468 Fore St. in Portland, is hosting a sake tasting on Saturday, June 16, at 6 p.m. Aptly named the 5&5, chef Masa Miyake will prepare five bites to accompany five samples of sake. The tasting will be led by sake importer Michael Simkin. Cost is $50 per person.
For those who love beer or want to learn more about it, the Bier Cellar opened June 2 at 229 Forest Ave. in Portland. Owners Greg and Katie Norton have stocked a large selection of craft beer, wine, cider and mead, and will hold informational beer tastings. They are open Tuesday through Sunday.
For more drinks, bar snacks and live music, Mark’s Place, a restaurant and lounge at 416 Fore St. in Portland, is slated to open soon. The new establishment will be open seven days a week from 6 a.m. to 1 a.m.
The Cabot Farmers’ Annex is expected to open at 163 Commercial St. in Portland on June 15. The store will offer Cabot cheese and New England products.
In Cape Elizabeth, the Twilight Dinner Series at Turkey Hill Farm will be held each Thursday starting July 5 at 6:30 p.m. The casual, three-course meals will be prepared by area chefs through Sept. 6. All proceeds from the $30 cost will benefit Cultivating Community and can be purchased online through Brown Paper Tickets.
District, at 45 Danforth St. in Portland, closed on June 7, after about a year and a half of business. The restaurant phone is disconnected and the website has been removed.
And in South Portland, the owners of Cafe Cambridge hav closed the coffee and bakehouse at 740 Broadway. In a post on Facebook, owner Vicki Cambridge and general manager Stephan Thayer thanked their customers, partnering businesses and staff for the past two years of business.
