Senior Mike Marzilli (second from right) recently received the first-ever William H. Best award as the Most Outstanding Contributor on the Deering football team. The award was created to honor the history of the Deering High School program, players and to continue its proud tradition. It was named for Best (1922- 2009), an all-state guard in 1938 and 1939, who went on to play semi-pro ball for the Portland Morrells. Best also served in World War Two.

William Best’s grandson, Matthew (left), Deering coach Matt Riddell and Best’s brother, Arthur (far right), were also on hand.
