Deering’s Jared Bell, the Class A state champion in the discus and shot put, was named Maine’s Gatorade boys’ Outdoor Track and Field Athlete of the Year Thursday. Bell is now a finalist for the Gatorade national award, to be announced later this month. Bell set new meet records in the discus (176 feet, 7 inches) and the shot put (57-2.25). He was fourth in the javelin. Bell, Deering’s Winter Male Athlete of the Year, is also a published poet, an ‘A’ student and a member of Deering’s student government, will attend and throw at Princeton University next year.
