PORTLAND — The person killed in a head-on collision early Sunday morning has been identified as 18-year-old Guy Kitoko.

Kitoko was the front-seat passenger in a car driven by Yannick Mulongo, a 21-year-old Portland resident. The vehicle, a 2001 Ford Mustang, was traveling on Brighton Avenue at around 2:35 a.m. when it reportedly crossed the center line and hit a 2000 Chevy Impala being driven by Fartum Aden, 31, of Portland.

There were four passengers in the Mustang and two in the Impala. Police Sgt. Gary Hutcheson said there were several broken bones among those involved.

According to police, the accident happened at the intersection of Capisic Street and Brighton Avenue. Several utility poles were taken out during the collision. 

Kitoko was pronounced dead at the scene. Police believe speed and alcohol were factors in the crash.

No charges have been filed, Hutcheson said Tuesday, although the Cumberland County district attorney’s office is investigating.

Kitoko, a Deering High School senior, was a member of the football team and took classes at Portland Arts and Technology High School, according to Deering Principal Ken Kunin. He was an honor roll student in 11th grade.

Kunin said school staff started to get word Sunday afternoon that Kitoko was the likely victim and prepared for a grief counseling room to be set up where students and staff could go for a break or to speak with a counselor.

Teachers were given a statement to read to their students Monday morning.

“We knew from the Twitter and Facebook traffic that the kids would come in aware,” Kunin said.

A letter was also sent home with students Monday to inform parents of Kitoko’s death and the available services.

“Those services will go on as long as we need them,” Kunin said.

Funeral services for Kitoko are scheduled for Saturday at 10 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church.
