PORTLAND — Dayton O. Serber, 90, of Falmouth died Jan. 27 at Maine Medical Center after a brief illness.
He was born in North Holston, Va., on Sept. 15, 1919, one of 13 children of William and Sarah (Tolbert) Surber.
At age 16 he left school to join the Civil Conservation Corps.
In 1938 he pitched for a semi-pro baseball team associated with the St. Louis Cardinals. He later joined the U.S. Army and was stationed at Fort McKinley on Great Diamond Island.
During World War II he worked as a mine planter in Casco Bay.
After his honorable discharge, he worked for the U.S. Railroad, the Army Corps of Engineers at Fort Williams and lastly for the U.S. Postal Service until he retired in 1981.
In his younger years he was active in bluegrass music groups. In 2009 he was inducted into the National Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame and the Maine Country & Western Music Hall of Fame.
An avid fisherman and hunter, he hunted every fall from his camp on Pitcher Pond in Lincolnville.
He was predeceased by his wife, Ruth Emily (Hamilton) Serber, on Dec. 17, 1992.
Surviving are his three children, Shelley Lynn Serber of Windham, John Ardell Serber and his wife Suzanne of Windham and Mark William Serber and his wife Nadine of Falmouth; five grandchildren, Deanna Gouzie, Christopher Serber, Joshua Serber, Adam Serber and Chelsea Solis; eight great-grandchildren, Daniel, Tanner, Eliza, Aiden, Ian, Addison, Lilah and Wyatt; and several nieces and nephews.
Memorial services were held Jan. 31.
