CAPE ELIZABETH — Daniel James Conley, 69, died unexpectedly April 30.

He was born in Rochester, N.Y., on July 31, 1940, a son of Ellen and James Conley and attended school in Lockport, N.Y.

In 1962 he graduated from the University of Detroit with a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, and worked in Detroit for the next 14 years.

In 1976 he moved his family to Maine to take a position at Maine Cement Products as operations manager and was later promoted to president of the parent company, MECAW Industries.

For the last 20 years, he was self-employed as a civil and environmental engineering consultant.

Throughout his life, he took pride in serving his community and church. He was a  member of the board of directors for St. Joseph’s Manor nursing home in Portland. As an active member of St. Bartholomew’s Catholic Church in Cape Elizabeth, he served as a Eucharistic minister for 33 years.

He was passionate about cooking gourmet meals for friends and family and enjoyed golfing with his wife and friends. 

More than anything, he was devoted to his family.

Surviving are his beloved wife of 45 years, Jean of Cape Elizabeth; his four daughters, Anne Stauss and her husband Jim of Hopkinton, Mass., Maggie Frigard and her husband Steve of South Portland, Katie Conley and Mary Conley, both of San Francisco; his four grandchildren, Jack, Martha, and Kate Stauss and Teddy Frigard; his brother, John Conley and his wife Lynn of Wake Forest, N.C.; his sister-in-law Mary Lou Chamberlain and her husband David of Lockport, N.Y.; and three nephews and one niece.

Visiting hours will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, May 5 at Hobbs Funeral Home, 230 Cottage Road, South Portland.

A mass of Christian burial will be held at 12 p.m., Thursday, May 6 at St Bartholomew’s Church in Cape Elizabeth.
