CUMBERLAND — The Town Council Monday set an April 27 date for revisiting the creation of a Village Center Committee.

The committee, which would create long-term planning goals for the town center area, was first proposed in December by Councilor Michael Perfetti, but tabled until this month. In tabling the matter, the council had hoped for further information about changes to the non-conforming use ordinance.

Those changes, which include lengthened periods of time before an unused non-conforming property would revert back to its underlying zone, were forwarded to the Planning Board on Monday.

Recent discussion surrounding a contract zone for a credit union on Main Street raised the issue of long-term planning on Main Street. Perfetti voted against the contract zone, because he felt that long-term planning would be better public policy than contract zoning.

The proposed committee will be discussed at the Town Council’s regular meeting at 7 p.m. on April 27 at Town Hall.
