YARMOUTH — Police arrested a Topsham man Sunday morning for allegedly operating under the influence after he reportedly crashed his minivan into two police cruisers at an accident scene.

Cumberland police said they responded just after 4 a.m. to Interstate 295 in Yarmouth near Mile 16, where the cruisers were hit. Yarmouth Officer Derek Lucas and Freeport Officer Malcolm Marshall were on the scene for an earlier motor vehicle accident when a northbound Honda Odyssey, driven by Connor Fitzsimmons, 27, of Topsham, did not yield to the officer’s cruisers and struck both vehicles, police said on Facebook.

Neither the officers nor Fitzsimmons were seriously injured, although Lucas was treated briefly at the hospital for symptoms consistent with whiplash, according to Cumberland Police Chief Chip Rumsey.

Cumberland Officer Antonio Ridge arrested Fitzsimmons at 6:13 a.m. on a charge of operating under the influence.

When a police cruiser is involved in an accident, an officer from a different agency investigates the crash, Rumsey said in an interview Monday.
