CUMBERLAND — The Fire Department reported trees down around town Tuesday morning in the wake of Hurricane Sandy, but no damage to homes.

School Administrative District 51, which serves Cumberland and North Yarmouth, closed its schools, as did Chebeague Island.

Tuttle and Greely roads were temporarily closed to remove fallen trees, Capt. Evariste Bernier said. Many people on the west side of town were without power, Bernier said.

North Yarmouth Administrative Assistant Marnie Diffin said Tuesday morning that she had not heard of significant damage caused by the storm, and that she also had not heard of any residents with power. She said Central Maine Power Co. reported around 9:30 a.m. that crews might reach the town within about four hours.

Chebeague Town Administrator Eric Dyer said power was out around the island, and while he heard of one home being hit by a tree, the damage reportedly was not serious.
